Tomoe-Ryu Combat Judo

Maximum efficiency, maximum effect.

Tomoe Ryu is intended as a self-defense system that can be used to defend against stronger and faster opponents. It is inspired by the needs of LGBT people, who face the possibility of violence over who they are and who they choose to love.

Although this art employs techniques from arts such as Brazilian jujitsu, boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, and muay thai, Tomoe-Ryu frames these techniques within common simple principles that follow the spirit of Jigoro Kano, his approach to martial arts, and his maxims of “seiryoku zenyo” (maximum efficiency) and “jita kyoei” (mutual benefit). Therefore, we honor his work by calling this discipline a type of Judo.

Our techniques have been developed in response to gay-bashing recordings, reports, and accounts by survivors. It is intended and tailored to match the needs of the LGBT community. In a very real sense, ours is a LGBT family martial art. We cover legality, scenario evaluation, basic skills such as rolling falls and efficient striking for small-bodied people, as well as use of common items such as keys and water bottles as self-defense tools. We will give students a firm grounding in realistic self-defense.
